Finding Balance as a Working Mom

finding balance as a working momFinding balance in your life as a working mom can seem like a bit of an oxymoron. It’s not easy, and certainly not for the faint of heart. Just being a mom is difficult, and adding a part or full time job on top of that can make any mama feel like they’re losing it. Unfortunately for some mamas, going back to work after having a baby is not an option. It may be necessary for a variety of reasons, including financial necessity or needing adult interaction during the day. It is most definitely possible to find balance between work life and home life, and below are a few simple tips to incorporate into your daily life that may help.

Finding Balance as a Working Mom

  1. Ask for help – This is sitting at number one for a reason. Most mamas find asking for help to be one of the hardest things to do, despite it being essential. Without asking for help, you may find yourself feeling chronically overwhelmed and stressed out. It’s ok to ask for help and to rely on the support of others. Find people that you trust and that support your wants and needs.

2. Be mindful in your relationships – Check in with yourself to see if you are present in both your personal and professional relationships. If you’re not, it may be helpful to ask yourself why. If a relationship does not bring you joy or make you feel supported, it may impact your ability to feel balanced.

3. It is ok to say no – We cannot say yes to every commitment that comes our way. As hard as it is to say no or turn something down, it is crucial for your sanity and stress level to do so. Whether it be an extra task at work or a get together on the weekend with family or friends, it’s ok to respectfully decline. Try not to overcommit, and check in with yourself if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes life happens, and it’s also ok to reschedule a commitment if absolutely necessary.

4. Try to get away – Whether it is planning a full on vacation or a little family weekend get away, it is essential to take a break. You certainly do not need to spend a lot of money to take time away. Alone time is always nice, but not always practical. Take time to just have fun with your family with minimal expectations or stressors.
