The Ugly Christmas Sweater Craze

The ugly Christmas sweater has become the new fashion statement of the holiday season.  These days the more embellishments the trendier and more fashionable the sweater is.  Hideous holiday versions only began to show up in the last several decades.

It’s hard to determine who is responsible for the rise of the ugly Christmas sweater.  Some say it was Bill Cosby (as Cliff Huxtable) on the ’80s sitcom, The Cosby Show, who was the founder of the ugly-sweater phenomenon.   Others say, Chevy Chase made it fashionable to wear these repulsive sweaters in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.  Both these characters definitely stand out as contributors to the ugly Christmas sweater trend.  However, the city of Vancouver, Canada, claims to be the birthplace of the first ugly sweater party in 2002.   It doesn’t matter who started it, this trend has steadily gained momentum since the 80s.  It is now considered highly fashionable to wear an ugly Christmas sweater.

In fact, it’s so popular these days that there is a national Christmas Sweater Day.   This holiday typically falls on the third Friday of December.  This year, that day is December 15th.   This holiday encourages everyone to wear their Christmas sweaters for one day.   Right next to halloween costumes, this is the only other time where it’s totally acceptable to go crazy.  I say, go for it!

To get you ready for this fun holiday trend, here are some of my favorites.
